Auld Lang Syne

Auld Lang Syne is a song that many people sing at the beginning of each year.  The song began as a poem by Robert Burns.  It goes:

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne.

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my jo,
For auld lang syne,
We'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne,

And surely ye'll be your pint-stowp!
And surely I'll be mine!
And we'll tak a cup o' kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Chorus

We twa hae run about the braes
And pu'd the gowans fine;
But we've wander'd mony a weary foot
Sin auld lang syne.

Chorus

We twa hae paidl'd i' the burn,
Frae mornin' sun till dine;
But seas between us braid hae roar'd
Sin auld lang syne.

Chorus

And there's a hand, my trusty fiere!
And gie's a hand o' thine!
And we'll tak a right guid willy waught,
For auld lang syne.

Chorus

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
And long, long ago.

Chorus

And for long, long ago, my dear
For long, long ago,
We'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For long, long ago
And surely you’ll buy your pint-jug!
And surely I'll buy mine!
And we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
For long, long ago.

Chorus

We two have run about the hills
And pulled the daisies fine;
But we've wandered manys the weary foot
Since long, long ago.

Chorus

We two have paddled in the stream,
From morning sun till dine;
But seas between us broad have roared
Since long, long ago.

Chorus

And there's a hand, my trusty friend!
And give us a hand of yours!
And we'll take a deep draught of good-will
For long, long ago.

Chorus

This song has been one that I’ve never understood what it means.  As we move from 2020 to 2021 it takes on a meaning for me.  In 2020, we have fought a battle of sorts with COVID or are fighting against losing a way of life.

We want thing to stay the same, but it’s just not possible.  Not one of us will be or can be the same once this year is over.

We can only see what 2021 has in store for us.  What we do know is that 2021 needs a little more kindness.  Reading out and helping our fellow neighbors who are hurting.  Maybe they’ll reach back and we can “hold hands” on our imagination.

We need to be there for each other and support each other.  2021 still has lessons for us, but they’re always easier when a trusted friend has your hand.

My wish for 2021 is that we can find a new sense of life that feels freer.  That we can be kind to ourselves and our neighbors who are suffering and come together to create a better vision for the world.

Look for the Miracle

If any year feels like you could use a miracle, it would be 2020.  Christmas is a time for miracles!

Have you ever experienced a miracle?  When the odds are against you, but somehow, some way, things end up ok.

When I was a teenager, I got to witness a Christmas miracle from the sidelines.  At Christmas, my grandparents and great aunt would come to celebrate at our house.  For some reason that year, we were at my grandparents’ home.  Her sister called on Christmas Eve to let us know her daughter’s husband had been taken to the Emergency Room.  My grandmother was hard of hearing, so all her conversations were on speakerphone.  The odds weren’t good.  He only had a 25% chance of surviving an aneurysm.  Somehow, someway, he is still with us.  All the people that needed to be there for him to survive were.

That Christmas has stuck with me for more than 20 years now.  I don’t remember what I received for gifts or what we ate, but I remember the miracle we received.

This year’s Christmas is going to different for a number of reasons.  It won’t make it any less special.  It could be a year that stands out.  A year where you appreciate what’s around you.

We always seem to want what we can’t have.  It’s part of human nature.  This is a time for gratitude, joy, and the unexpected miracles that can come our way.

Miracles wouldn’t be what they are if they happened every day.  The Spirit of Christmas, whether you celebrate it or not, is full of magic. You must look for it, though.

The days are shorter, and it gets dark early, but with the darkness comes Christmas light displays and candles in the window.

If you haven’t decorated yet, it could be for so many reasons.  People are more depressed this time of year.  We miss what isn’t with us, but what if it is?  Magic and miracles are all around you.  No matter what your feels are during this season.  Maybe this year, everything changes for the better.  You don’t know if you aren’t looking.

Look for the miracles.   They aren’t always what they seem.  But they are there. Let’s end the year on a positive note.

Time to Count Your Blessings

It can be challenging to even think of being thankful or counting your blessings when it appears there’s so much wrong in life. 2020 has made it difficult for even the most optimistic to find a silver lining.  There is one, but you have to look harder.

What have your lessons been this year?  Would you have found them if COVID hadn’t happened?  Each one of you wants the world to go back to “normal”.  But what does that mean?  With the holiday season upon us, it’s more important than ever to find that sense of magic.

It could be that you rely on some sense of tradition.  Decorating the house.  Being appreciative of the people around you every day.

You can dig deeper.  Maybe you have found what’s truly important.  You’ve learned something about yourself that you wouldn’t have in some other way.

I have learned a lot about myself.  There was a point in time that I disliked any change whatsoever.  There’s still a piece of that attitude there at times.  Other times I can roll with it and ask what does Spirit have in store for me?  Like most of you, I don’t care for wearing a mask, but if it keeps me and those I care about safe I will continue for as long as necessary.  But thanks to COVID, I have learned what’s true about my own energy and how that is seen by those around me.  I have learned what I truly value and am in the process of aligning my life with those values.  I don’t think I would have seen either of these without COVID.

The beginning of the year gave me the freedom to finish my empowerment certification program.  I was also able to concentrate on expanding my knowledge of astrology.  Still working on this and I think I always will be, but I’m ok with that.  I’m starting to read charts for my family and friends, something that I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do a year ago.

To move forward this practice is essential.  It can be hard to reflect, but it’s necessary.  Take the time to figure out your lessons.  They are so important to what 2021 has in store for you.

What Type of Person Are You?

Who are you?  Are you an impulsive person who acts before you think?  You see something then you grab it.  Or are you the person you’ll ponder something until it seems like you’re being forced to make a decision.  It would seem like the ideal would be to be somewhere in the middle with a sense of balance in your emotions.

This is holiday time, so retailers are counting on the impulsive side of you.  The part of you that does, I want it.  I must have it and I want it now.  Retailers aren’t looking for the person who takes 6 months to make a decision.

I worked in a grocery store for more than 6 years.  They base the layout of the grocery store on impulse shoppers and capitalizing on that emotion.

Your inbox gets flooded with sales offers.  50% off your purchase.  For the impulse person, it can be a challenge to see how much you can save.

The other type of person, he or she ponders the same purchase day after day, week after week.  Until they’re finally ready to make that purchase.  You can drive those around you crazy while you make your decision.

You don’t really want to be either type of person in this case.  You want a balanced approach.  You want to educate yourself to make the decision and then make the decision.  This could take a few hours or a few days depending on the decision.

What do you need to do to feel confident in your decision?  There’s a reason why experts tell you to sleep on it.  Let it sit for a couple of days and come back to it.

Decisions that take too long to make, may never happen.  Decisions that are made impulsively can lead to an accumulation of things you don’t need.

Decisions are important.  They have the possibility to changing the course of your life, but it’s important to make one.
